Measuring and Dimensions

Understand what to measure and how WinFactor validates size inputs

Measuring and Dimensions

The configurator starts with the overall opening size. Getting this part right makes the rest of the flow much easier.

What an opening means

In WinFactor, the opening is the full space the product needs to fit into. That is usually the wall opening or structural opening, not the size of one individual pane or sash.

What to measure

Measure:

  • the full width from left to right
  • the full height from top to bottom
  • multiple points if the opening is not perfectly square

When measurements vary, use the smallest reliable value unless your supplier tells you otherwise.

Why the configurator shows a range

Every template has a minimum and maximum width and height. Those limits come from the supplier's product setup and usually reflect:

  • manufacturing limits
  • hardware requirements
  • structural limits
  • transport or installation limits

If your opening is outside the range, choose a different template or contact the supplier directly.

Metric and imperial input

WinFactor supports both metric and imperial entry depending on the organization settings.

Metric

  • usually entered in millimeters
  • best when you already have technical measurements

Imperial

Common valid formats include:

  • 36
  • 36.5
  • 36 1/2
  • 3' 6"

Fractions are snapped to standard increments such as halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths.

Validation behavior

You may see:

  • out-of-range errors when the value is below minimum or above maximum
  • format errors when imperial input cannot be parsed
  • small-value warnings when an imperial value looks unusually small

If the size does not update, the input usually has not been accepted yet as a valid value.

What happens after you enter size

Once width and height are valid:

  • the preview updates
  • the layout is scaled to your opening
  • the next steps can calculate section sizes based on the overall opening

Measuring tips

  • measure twice before submitting
  • keep units consistent
  • do not estimate based on a photo
  • if you are unsure whether to measure frame size or opening size, contact the supplier before you submit
